Jane was born in Trotter in 1894, the eldest daughter of Catherine Tormay and Edward Duncan. When Jane was sixteen and working in a company story, nearby her home in Trotter. Shortly after Jane returned from work on a seemingly normal day, her father heated some water on the coal stove and began to shave. A storm developed; lightning struck. There on the kitchen floor lay Jane's father, Edward, at the age of forty-nine. The episode had a traumatic effect upon the entire family; yet through great faith, hope, and love, the entire family shortly overcame their great loss. John King was named new Director of Training, at Meridian International Center, on December 1, 1994. He first went to the Training Division as an Executive Intern in the Spring of 1993. In September 1993, he joined the staff as a part-time trainer and program development manager. John had been Acting Director of Training when an employee left Meridian, in August of 1994.

John's diverse career experience range from serving as a history instructor at the Landon School in Bethesda to consulting in organizational development. In 1985-86, he was a visiting lecturer in English and economics at Xibei University in Xian, China. In 1988-89, John managed the Washington office of Ashoka, an international development organization supporting improvements in education, environment, health and human rights.

Background on Connor A. King

Attends the Maret School in Washington DC.

Probably the most unusual thing about Connor is that he has made a tremendous commitment to community service through his volunteer work at the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad. This is one of the largest and most active rescue squads in the Washington, D.C. area, and he takes his commitment there very seriously. He has spent over 600 hours volunteering and being trained, and now he is a certified Emergency Medical Technician (“EMT”) and a member of the regular Wednesday night crew. In addition to working every Wednesday from 7-11PM, every 5-6 weeks he is assigned to an 18-hour Saturday night shift that runs 7pm Saturday to 1pm on Sunday. To receive Maryland EMT certification, after completing the training, he had to pass both written and practical exams. In addition, he has taken classes in subjects such as Airborne and Blood-borne Pathogens, Data and Communications, EEOC Compliance and Diversity Training, and Personal Protective Equipment. This summer he is planning to take the class to train and get certified as an ambulance driver, as well as to be certified to work on the heavy equipment that is used for vehicle extrication. All of this has confirmed and enhanced his interest in emergency medicine, and he is planning to take the premed curriculum in college.

Connor also enjoys sports. He has played ice hockey and lacrosse all through high school; lacrosse on the team at Maret, and ice hockey on a Montgomery county league team.

Connor has about a 3.5 grade point average. Maret does not give extra grade points for advanced and AP classes, the way that many schools do, so the GPAs are generally lower than those at schools that do, but the colleges know that. His SATs were in the mid-high 600s, with low 700s for the Chemistry SAT II. He got a 4 on the AP Chemistry Exam, which he took last year. He is currently taking Advanced Physics, Calculus, Civil Liberties (a constitutional law course), an elective in Organic Chemistry, and a studio art class.

In addition to the course work at school, he did a summer intensive Spanish program in Costa Rica after his sophomore year.
