Thomas Gardner married twice. We know this from the fact that in his will he mentions his wife as the mother-widow of his sons. The Margaret Gardner, who united with the first Church in 1639, is supposed to have been his wife. Various writers, including Rev. Joseph B. It, have stated that her maiden name was Fryer (or Frier), but the writer has thus far failed to find the authority for this statement.

Rev. Charles Henry Pope, in his "Pioneers of Massachusetts" suggests that the Margaret who united with the Salem Church in 1639, may have been the wife of Edmund Gardner of Ipswich.

While Edmund's wife may have been named Margaret, it seems improbable that she was the one above mentioned as uniting with the Salem church, for the following reasons: Edmund is mentioned in the Ipswich Town Records as early as 1635, and very frequently thereafter. The Ipswich church was organized in 1634 and the wife of a man so prominent in local affairs would, in all probability, have united with the "home church."

His second wife was Damaris Shattuck, a widow, who was admitted to the church in Salem in 1641. She had several children by her first husband, one of whom, Sarah, married Richard Gardner son of Thomas. She, like most of her Shattuck relations, evidently favored the Friends, as she was called into court many times for being "present at a Quaker meeting," and for absence from her own church. In the 9th Mo. 1667, and the 4th Mo. In the year following, "Old Mrs. Gardner was fined 5 shillings for absence from public worship. She had no children by Thomas Gardner. The date of her death is given in the Salem Town Records, as 28, 9, 1674.

Thomas Gardner died the 29th 10th Mo. 1674, and was buried in the Gardiner burying ground, a hillock described as lot III.

The following extract from a deposition made by William Trask in 1677 is of interest in, this connection : "I never heard that Old Mr. Gardiner did hinder any from burring there dead there butt said att severall funeralls to friends & neighbours doe not burrey your dead by fuch a young tree for I doe defire to be burried there my felfe & accordingly to my knowledge he was buried there himselfe."

Thus ended his long and useful life. The writer feels that no eulogy can add to the glory of one who throughout his lifetime was so greatly honored by his fellow pioneers, and filled acceptably so many positions of trust and responsibility. Those were trying times, and Thomas Gardner well earned the high place which he has always held among the Old Planters.

WILLIAM C. FOLGER, in his notes on the Gardner family, makes the following entry: " Farmer, in his Register, says, 'Thomas Gardner came from Scotland;' a Nantucket tradition says he came from Sherborne, in the northern part of the County of Dorset, and that the former name of Nantucket (Sherburne) was given through the influence of his family. There is no question of the fact that they exercised considerable influence over the affairs of the town."
There are few natives of Nantucket who do not claim descent from Thomas Gardner.
From New England History and Genealogical Register, vol. xxv., pp. 48, 49, we learn that "Thomas Gardiner, the first of the Salem stock, came over in 1624 from Dorsetshire, England, near which the name had flourished for more than three centuries, and settled under the auspices of the Dorchester Company and Rev. John White, with thirteen others at Gloucester, Cape Ann, upon the grant of Lord Sheffield to Robert Cushman and Edward Winslow, made in January of that year.

Thomas Gardner, the common ancestor of the Salem-Nantucket Gardners, was born about 1592. He sailed from Weymouth and received an appointment from the Dorchester Company. He came to America in 1624 From Dorchester, England, landing at Stage Point in what is now Gloucester Harbor. Initially settling at Gloucester on Cape Ann, he was an overseer of a plantation. In 1626, the Dorchester Company moved from Cape Ann to the mouth of the Naumkeag River (Salem?). The Massachusetts Bay Colony admitted him as a freeman March 17, 1637. He died in Salem on Oct. 29, 1674. He was a prosperous merchant, a member of the General Court in 1637 an a holder of many town offices. he married twice, first to Margaret, the mother of all his children, and second to a Mrs. Damaris Shattuck. His son married a Shattuck likely the daughter of this woman. His name is listed in the register of the Society of colonial Wars, Connecticut Register. ("Thomas Gardner and Some of his Descendants" by Frank A. Gordon, MD., 1907: Ancestral Records and Portraits, Colonial Dames of America, Chapter 1, page 71).
According to "Passengers and Ships", a Thomas Gardner sailed on the Zouch Phenix with his wife (name not given in 1624. Also sailing on that ship were George Gardner (his son?), Richard Gardner, and Joseph Gardner.

Damaris Shattuck, then a widow, was admitted to the church in Salem in 1641. At what time she came from England, whether before or after the death of her first husband, and what his christian name was, are unknown. She afterwards became the 2nd wife of Capt. Thomas Gardner, a distinguished merchant and citizen of Salem. She d. in that town, Nov.28, 2674. Capt Gardner d. Sept. 4, 1677, leaving a will, dated Dec. 7, 1668, in which he men-tions his wife, Damaris, six sons-Thomas, George, John, Samuel, Joseph, and Richard; and daughters, Sarah Balch, Seeth Grafton, and Miriam Hall, all by his first wife, Margarct Frier. Two of his sons m. daughters of their stepmother.
Damaris had by Mr. Shattuck several children, all probably born in England.

The following quotation from W. C. Folger's article in the Nantucket Inquirer, in the issue of June 4, 1862, is so good a summary of the man's life, that I reproduce it entire: "Richard was a man of very good abilities, he was called long-headed by his brother John, from his sense of the profoundness of his Judgment. He held a prominent place among the people of the island, was at one time Chief Magistrate. His residence was about half way between the house of our present worthy Sheriff, (1862) and the Eliphalet Paddack house. It has been taken down many years, and the locality is very much altered in its appearance.

"The Gardners owned formerly much of the land adjacent to and surrounding the Lily pond, extending beyond Gardner's Burial Ground, and around the swamp on the North Shore Hill, also extending through Egypt (so called) to the present Town Hall, embracing some of the best meadows and grass lots on the island. A part of this territory was called Crooked Records, from the lines of the survey not coming together.....Richard Gardner Sen'r, and his brother Capt. John, exercised much influence in the community here while they lived, and they died respected."

Richard Gardner married Sarah Shattuck, daughter of widow Damaris Shattuck who married Thomas Gardner Sen'r as his second wife. Richard and Sarah are supposed to have been married about 1652, at Salem. Like nearly all of her Shattuck relation, she was attached to Society of Friends and suffered much in consequence.

In the County Court Records at Salem, Case 57, Term 5th mo., 1658, we find the following: "The wife of Richard Gardner was convicted of her frequent being absent from the publik ordinances on the Lord's Day, fees of court 30 sh."

W.C. Folger thought that Richard might have had a wife before Sarah, as the following quotation from his notes will show: "If the date of the marriage of Richard Gardner and Sarah Shattuck in 1652 as given by the late Lemuel Shattuck, Esq., be correct; then I am of the opinion that Richard must have had a former wife, as Richard Jr., was born oct. 23d, 1653, and if Joseph was born at a later period he would have been too young to have been married early in 1670. indeed the late B. Franklin Folger and other hight authorities have stated Joseph Gardner to have been the oldest son of Richard Gardner Sen'r." (W.C. Folger, in the Nantucket Inquirer, June 18, 1862)

Richard Gardner died 1st mo., 23d, 1688. the following reference is made in the records concerning the settlement of his estate: "Letters of administration on the estate of Mr. Richard Gardner Senior deceased are granted unto Sarah Gardner, Relict of Sd. Gardner, who bineath herself to perform the trust of an administratrix, and to barre the court harmless according to law." (Died March 18, 1688-9).

Like nearly all of Sarah Shattuck relations, she was attached to the Society of Friends and suffered much in consequence. She was brought before the court several times, either for neglecting to attend the services at the First Church in Salem, or for being present at a "Quaker Meeting." In 1662, she was excommunicated from the First Church in Salem for attending the assemblies of the Friends.
She was evidently a woman with a strong character, and one who was not afraid to act and speak her convictions. We see evidence of this independence even after her removal to Nantucket. "For speaking very opprobriously concerning the imprisonment of peeter foulgier,' she was arrested but pardoned on being intimidated into repentance."

They were excommunicated from the church in Salem for attending Quaker meetings; and they removed in 1666 to Nantucket, where their two youngest children were born.

Richard with three of his children removed to Nantucket, where more were born unto him. His eldest daughter, Sarah became the wife of Eleazer Folger, brother of Dr. Franklin's (Benjamin Franklin) mother. Some of his descendants intermarried with Coffins, Macys, Starbucks and other well-known names of that sea-girt isle, greatly multiplying and continuing prosperous down to our own time.

Notes for PATIENCE FOLGER:
Source: The Folger Family, Compiled by william Coleman Folger of Nantucket, a Corresponding Member of the N. E. Historic-Genealogical Society.

The name of Patience Folger's 1st husband has been given by genealogists here both John and Ebenezer; whether either was right is doubtful. I believe they lived in North Carolina, where probably the husband died; and the widow returned to Nantucket, where she married James Gardner, son of Richard, being his 2d or 3d wife. She died 1 mo., 1717-18. The name of Ferdinando Harker appears in a business transaction here under date of Feb. 7, 1681-2. Even the late B Franklin Folger, so well versed as he was in the Nantucket genealogies, could not be certain of the given name of the first husband of Patience. Very likely the Ebenezer whom I have given as a son, may be a grandson of patience. There are many descendants of Jonathan and Hepzibah (Harker) Coffin.

Mary Gardner was born on Nantucket and married Jethro Coffin, grandson of Tristram, in 1686. Their home, built later that year, is still standing on Nantucket. Now known as the oldest House, it is owned and operated by the Nantucket Historical Association. The Coffin/Gardner marriage symbolized the end of an early conflict in Nantucket society involving their families that was known as the "half-share revolt." John Gardner and Tristram Coffin were key figures in Nantuckets early governance. Coffin represented the "full-share" men, or original founders of Nantucket, while Gardner was one of a group of tradesmen who came to work on the island but received only half-shares. Bitter debates between the full-share and half-share parties raged on Nantucket about land rights, who cuold hold public office and the future directions for the island. A tentative compromise between the two factions was reached in 1678, but it was not until Coffin's death in 1681 and eventual marriage of his grandson into the Gardner family that a full resolution of this conflict occurred.

Margaret Paddack, ancestors were from England. Her grandmother was Bethia Macy, daughter of Thomas Macy who came from Salisbury, Whiltshire, England. Although he was said to have been a baptist preacher, Thomas Macy settled in Nantucket because of his persecution for "entertaining Quakers" by allowing them shelter on one stormy night. This was noted when he and Richard Swain were brought to court at the same time in 1659. The Macy line also appears in the next generation of Swains when Bethia Macy married Nathaniel Swain in 1755.

Christened in Nantucket, MA in the First Congregational Church on 7 Sep 1735.

John Coffin removed from nantucket to Barrington Nova Scotia, being one of the original grantees of the township. He was one of the first settlers in the area. About 1759-60 the British home government invited the colonials to move to Nova Scotia. In 1760 a committee representing 48 families, 35 from nantucket contacted the Council of nova Scotia regarding settling at Cape Sable, Barrington Township, in the province. The committee consisted of Reuben folger, Joseph Worth and Shubael Folger from Nantucket and Amos Knowles of Barnstable on Cape Cod. Of the 48 families who participated, only five had a wife or children, the rest consisted of only one person. In the spring of 1761 came a fleet of ships from nantucket and another fleet from Chatham. Among the nantucket group were John Coffin, Simeon coffin, Peleg Coffin and Elisha coffin with his wife and four children. We do not know whether John Coffin brought his wife Mary and four or five children (his second child Mary died young, probably before 1760.) but the next year son Tristram born 3 Jun 1762 was the first child born to this group of Americans in Nova Scotia.

"During the War several Nantucketers returned home, as noted, but John Coffin was still recorded as of the town of Barrington". One night John coffin and richard Pinkham, who were imprisoned aboard the whaleship "Alliance" captured early in the war, escaped by swimming ashore with their clothes tied in a bundle on their backs. They went down the coast and found safety at Barrington where John's aunt resided.
