ROBERT CUSHMAN
ORIGIN: Leiden, Holland
MIGRATION: 1621 in Fortune
FIRST RESIDENCE: Plymouth
RETURN TRIPS: Returned permanently to England 1621
OCCUPATION: Grocer (in Canterbury) ; wOolcomber (in Leiden)
EDUCATION: Several literate and businesslike letters written by Cushman to
JOHN CARVER, Edward Southworth, WILLIAM BRADFORD and to the Leiden congregation
are evidence of a well-educated man [Bradford 45, 54, 107, 125, 128, 355,
361, 365, 373] . On 12 December 1621, during his brief sojourn at Plymouth,
Cushman preached a sermon whose principal intent was to convince the Pilgrims
to accept the terms offerred by the London merchants, and was therefore more
of an economic than a theological nature. This sermon, accompanied by some
additional notes by Cushman, was published in London in 1622 [Young Pilgrim
Fathers 255-68]
BIRTH: Baptized Rolveden, Kent, 9 February 1577/8, son of Thomas and Elinor
(Hubbard) Couchman [NEHGR 68:131].
DEATH: 1625 in England. (On his return from England early in 1626 Myles Standish
"brought them notice of the death of their ancient friend Mr. Cushman,
whom the Lord took away also this year" [ Bradford 180].)
MARRIAGE: (1) St. Alphege, Canterbury, Kent, 31 July 1606 Sara Reder [NEHGR
68:183]; bur. St. Peter's, Leiden, 11 October 1616 [NS] [ Dexter 611; Small
Gen 671]
(2) Leiden 5 June 1617 [NS] "Mary Shingelton from Sandwich in England,
widow of Thomas Shingelton" [ MD 10:193; PERCH 68:183]; apparently dead
before 1621 as there is no evidence she came to Plymouth with her husband
and stepson.
COMMENTS: Beginning in 1617, and continuing right up until the time of his
death, Robert Cushman spent much time in London and vicinity negotiating on
behalf of the Leiden congregation and later on behalf also of the settlers
in Plymouth. He, JOHN CARVER and WILLIAM BREWSTER labored constantly in their
dealings with a number of London merchants, arranging for the shipping and
provisions for the Mayflower and the Speedwell in 1620. The details of these
negotiations constitute a large portion of the story told by Bradford in his
history of these years.
Cushman had planned to make the voyage across the Atlantic in 1620, but when
the Speedwell had to be abandoned he was one of those who remained behind
[ Bradford 54] . This original intention of Cushman's and his many other services
in behalf of the Pilgrims are undoubtedly the justification for the assignment
to Cushman in 1623 of land in Plymouth as if he had been a passenger on the
Mayflower.
On 2 November 1636 "William Hodgekins & Sara Cushman" were married
at Plymouth [ PCR 1:45] . Some have held that this was another child of Robert
Cushman, but this remains only a surmise [see Small Gen 688-93]
BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: Lora Underhill has gathered together every record known
to her of the life of Robert Cushman, and in the process has compiled the
best biography available of the man. Her treatment also goes into great detail
on the career of his son Thomas [Small Gen 669-755, with Robert Cushman at
669-93] . Elizabeth French in 1914 published her research into the ancestry
of Robert Cushman, including extensive transcripts of records of the family
in Kent [ NEHGR 68:181-85]

CUSHMAN, ROBERT - One of the Leiden Separatist leaders, Robert Cushman's English
origins are given by Elizabeth French, "Genealogical Research in England-Cushman
"NEHGR 68:181. He was baptized at Rolveden, Kent, 9 February 1577/78,
son of Thomas and Elinor (Hubbard) Couchman. He was an apprentice to George
Masters; was excommunicated from St. Andrews Church, Canterbury, after saying
that he could not be edified by going to that church; was received back in
the church in 1605; and in the same year became a freeman of Canterbury, being
described as a grocer. His first wife was Sara Reder, by whom he had son Thomas,
q.v., and he married (2) at Leiden in 1617 Mary (Clarke) Shingleton. He and
John Carver were chosen by their fellow Separatists to go to England to negotiate
for a patent to go to America, and Bradford in his History has much to relate
about him. In 1621 he arrived at Plymouth on the Fortune with son thomas,
but returned to England with the Fortune, leaving Thomas in the care of Governor
Bradford. Cushman died in 1625 before having the chance to return to Plymouth.
A good account of his family can be found in Small Descendants, 2:669, which
mentions also that a Sarah Cushman who married William Hoskins on 6 October
1636 was thought to be the daughter of Robert Cushman (Hoskins married [2]
on 21 December 1638 Ann Hynes [PCR 1:45, 1071].

Robert Cushman's Letter to Edward Southworth
If you thought the Mayflower's voyage was well
organized, and that the Pilgrims were all cooperative with one another, and
everything went smoothly--think again. This letter was written by Robert Cushman,
one of the most prominent members of the Pilgrims congregation at Leyden.
He had been the Pilgrim's negotiator with Thomas Weston, and organized the
hiring of the ships that would take the Pilgrims to America. He planned to
go to America with the Mayflower and Speedwell himself. However, as can be
seen by this letter, the Speedwell repeatedly got leaks and was forced in
for repairs. A few days after this letter was written, it was decided the
Speedwell would not be taken to America, and some of the passengers decided
they no longer wanted to make the voyage because of lack of space, and the
gloomy outlook for the colony's success. One of those passengers--not surprisingly--was
Robert Cushman. Cushman's words, like "Friend, if ever we make a plantation,
God works a miracle", "If I should write to you of all things which
promiscuously forerun our ruin, I should over-charge my weak head and grieve
your tender heart", and "Poor William Ring and myself do strive
who shall be meat first for the fishes" echo hauntingly, and foreshadow
many problems the Pilgrims had after reaching America.
Dartmouth, August 17
LOVING FRIEND, my most kind remembrance to you
and your wife, with loving E.M. etc., whom in this world I never look to see
again. For besides the eminent dangers of this voyage, which are no less than
deadly, an infirmity of body hath seized me, which will not in all likelihood
leave me till death. what to call it I know not, but it is a bundle of lead,
as it were, crushing my heart more and more these fourteen days; as that although
I do the actions of a living man, yet I am but as dead, but the will of God
be done.
Our pinnace will not cease leaking, else I think we had been half-way to Virginia.
Our voyage hither hath been as full of crosses as ourselves have been of crookedness.
We put in here to trim her; and I think, as others also, if we had stayed
at sea but three or four hours more, she would have sunk right down. And though
she was twice trimmed at Hampton, yet now she is as open and leaky as a sieve;
and there was a board a man might have pulled off with his fingers, two foot
long, where the water came in as at a mole hole. we lay at Hampton seven days
in fair weather, waiting for her, and now we lie here waiting for her in as
fair a wind as can blow, and so have done these four days, and are like to
lie four more, and by that time the wind will happily turn as it did at Hampton.
Our victuals will be half eaten up, I think, before we go from the coast of
Englnad, and if our voyage last long, we shall not have a month's victuals
when we come in the country. Near L700 hath been bestowed at Hampton, upon
what I know not; Mr. Martin saith he neither can nor will give any account
of it, and if he be called upon for accounts, he crieth out of unthankfulness
for his pains and care, that we are suspicious of him, and flings away, and
will end nothing. Also he so insulteth over our poor people, with such scorn
and contempt, as if they were not good enough to wipe his shoes. It would
break your heart to see his dealings, and the mourning of our people; they
complain to me, and alas! I can do nothing for them. If I speak to him he
flies inmy face as mutinous, and saith no complaints shall be heard or received
but by himself, and saith they are forward and waspish, discontented people,
and I do ill to hear them. there are others that would lose all they ahve
put in, or make satisfaction for what they have had, that they might depart;
but he will not hear them, nor suffer them to go ashore, lest they should
run away. the sailors are so offended at his ignorant boldness in medding
and controlling in things he knows not what belongs to, as that some threaten
to mischief him; others say they will leave the ship and go their way. But
at the best this cometh of it, that he makes himself as scorn and laughing
stock unto them. As for Mr. Weston, except grace do greatly sway him, he will
hate us ten times more than ever he loved us, for not confirming the conditions.
But now, since some pinches have taken them, they begin to revile the truth
and Mr. Robinson was in the fault who charged them never to consent to those
conditions, nor choose me ito office; but indeed appointed them to choose
them they did choose. But he and they will rue too late, they may now see,
and all be ashamed when it is too late, that they were so ignorant; yea and
so inordinate in their courses. I am sure as they were resolved not to seal
those conditions, I was not so resolute at Hampton to have left the whole
business, except they would seal them, and better the voyage to have been
broken off then than to have brought such misery to ourselves, dishonour to
God and detriment to our living friends, as now it is like to do. Four or
five of the chief of them which came from Leyden, came resolved never to go
on those conditions. And Mr. Martin, he said he never received no money on
those conditions; he was not beholden to the merchants for a pin, they were
bloodsuckers, and I know not what. Simple man, he indeed never made any conditions
with the merchants, nor ever spake with them. But did all the money fly at
Hampton, or was it his own? Who will go and lay out money so rashly and lavishly
as he did, and never know how he comes by it or on what conditions? Secondly,
I told him of the alteration long ago and he was content, but now he domineers
and said I had betrayed them into the hands of slaves; he is not beholden
to them, he can set out two ships himself to a voyage. when, good man? He
hat but L50 in and if he should give up his accounts he would not have a penny
left him, as I am persuaded, etc. Friend, if ever we make a plantation, God
works a miracle, especially considering how scant we shall be of victuals,
and most of all ununited amongst ourselves and devoid of good tutors and regiment.
Violence will break all. where is the meek and humble spirit of Moses? and
of Nehemiah who re-edified the walls of Jerusalem, and the state of Isreal?
Is not the sound of Rehoboam's brags daily here amongst us? Have not the philosophers
and all the wise men observed that, even in settled commonwealths, violent
governors bring either themselves or people or both to ruin? How much more
in the raising of commonwealths, when the mortar is yet scarce tempered that
should bind the walls! if I should write to you of all things which promiscuously
forerun our ruin, I should over-charge my weak head and grieve your tender
heart. Only this, I pray you prepare for evil tidings of us every day. But
pray for us instantly, it may be the lord will be yet entreated one way or
other to make for us. I see not in reason how we shall escape even the gaspings
of hunger-starved persons; but God can do much, and His will be done. It is
better for me to die than now for me to bear it, which I do daily and expect
it hourly, having received the sentence of death both within me and without
me. Poor William Ring and myself do strive who shall be meat first for the
fishes; but we look for a glorious resurrection, knowing Christ Jesus after
the flesh no more, but looking unto the joy that is before us, we will endure
all these things and account them light in comparison of that joy we hope
for.
Remember me in all love to our friends as if I named them, whose prayers I
desire earnestly and wish again to see, but not till I can with more comfort
look them in the face. The Lord give us that true comfort which none can take
from us. I had a desire to make a brief relation of our estate to some friend.
I doubt not but your wisdom will teach you seasonable to utter things as hereafter
you shall be called to it. that which I have written is true, and many things
more which I have forborn. I write it as upon my life, and last confession
in England. What is of use to be spoken presently, you may speak of it; and
what is fit to conceal, conceal. Pass by my weak manner, for my head is weak,
and my body feeble. the Lord make me strong in Him, and keep both you and
yours.
Your loving friend,
Robert Cushman

He was Elder of the Plymouth Church from 6 April
1649 until his death, (43 years).
Reared from age 14 by Gov. William Bradford when
his father left him in his care when he returned to London to continue his
work for the colony before he died in 1625 of the plague prevalent at that
time.
The will of Thomas Cushman Sr. of Plimouth dated
22 Oct. 1690, sworn 16 March 1691/2, names wife Mary Cushman; sons Thomas,

CUSHMAN, THOMAS - The son of Robert Cushman, q.v., Thomas was baptized at
Canterbury 8 February 1607/8, and he was taken by his father to Leiden shortly
after. He arrived at Plymouth on the Fortune in 1621, and became a ward of
Governor Bradford. He was a Purchaser and received a number of land grants.
He was admitted a Plymouth freeman 1 January 1633/34 (PCR 1:21). On 1 July
1634 he successfully sued Mr. John Combes for 10 pounds (PCR 1:30. He served
on various juries and committees and was a highway surveyor (PCR, passim).
On 1 December 1640 he, Nicholas Snow, and Josias Cooke were presented by the
grand jury for not mending the highways, but were freed on condition that
they make the repairs within a year (PCR2:5. On 3 march 1645/46 Cushman made
a successful mothin in court that Mr. Isaac Allerton be allowed a year's time
to recover his debts in the colony (PCR 2:95). Allerton was his father-in-law,
Cushman having married Mary Allerton at an unknown date. By a letter of 27
October 1646, Allerton had assigned to his son-in-law Thomas Cushman a debt
of 100 pounds owed Allerton by Mr. John Coombes (PCR 2:130-33). On 1 August
1648 the court of Assistants assigned part of some grain due the widow of
John Coombes toward satisfying the debt of her late husband to Cuthbert Cuthbertson,
whose estate was a debtor "of considerable some" to Isaac Allerton.
Cushman succeeded William Brewster as Ruling Elder of the Plymouth church
on 6 April 1649, the position having been vacant since 1644 (Ply. ch. Recs.
1:165). He had differences with the pastor, John Cotton, as the latter noted
in church records in 1683, writing that the elders met with the pastor and
decided to put their differences to some other churches for advice, and the
Elder (Cushman) moved that the magistrates be invited to meet with and advise
them. In succeeding months there are additional intimations of differences
in which "the Elder showed discontent" (Ply. Ch. recs. 1:251, 253-54).
He became ill in his old age and languished for souie eleven weeks before
he died on 10 or 11 December 1691, another man whose life was virtually cotern-dnal
with that of Plymouth Colony (Ply. ch. Recs. 1:165-66; George E Bowman, "Elder
Thomas Cushman's Will and Inventory, and the Records of His Death," MD
4:37). In his will dated 22 October 1690, sworn 16 March 1691/92, he named
his wife Mary, sons Thomas, Isaac, Elkanah, and Eleazer; daughters Sarah Hawks
and Lydia Harlow; and the three children of his daughter Mary Hutchinson.
he also had a daughter Fear (PCR 8:15), who predeceased him without issue.
Family histories, not sufficiently documented, and Henry W. Cushman Historical
and Biographical Genealogy of the Cushmans (Boston, 1855), and Joseph A. Cushman,
The First Seven Generations of the Cushman Family New England (1964). An important
article is Mrs. John E Barclay and Anna M. Gurney, "Rebecca, Wife of
Reverend Isaac Cushman" (TAG 26:144), which shows the error in undocumented
published claims that the wife of Thomas Cushmans son Isaac was an Abigail
Richard; she was much more likely Rebecca 2 Harlow. Newman A Hall, "Mary
Cushman, Wife of Francis Hutchinson, An Isaac Allerton Line," MQ 52:28,
convincingly dears up the question as to which Hutchinson she married, showing
that it had to be Francis, not Edward. See also Tag 24:105 and NEHGR 122:48,
249,128:193 and the account of the Cushman family given in Small Descendants.
2:669. From the cited sources it can be seen that Cushman's daughter Mary
married Francis Hutchinson: Thomas married Ruth Howland, daughter of Mayflower
passenger John Howland; Sarah married John Howkes; Isaac probably married
Rebecca Harlow; Elkanah married (1) Elizabeth Cole and (2) Martha Cooke; Fear
died without issue; Eleazer married Elizabeth Combes; and Lydia married William
Harlow.

and particularly the church of Plymouth for many years in the office of the
Ruling Elder, fell asleep in Jesus, Decmr. Ye 10, 1691 & ye 84 year of
his age."
It will be noticed that the day of his death by the Church Records, is Dec.
11th, but by his grave stone it is Dec. 10th; which is correct is unknown.
Notes for MARY ALLERTON:
Mary Allerton, dau of Isaac & Mary (Norris) Allerton who came on Mayflower
to Plymouth in 1620, married at Plymouth 1636. Isaac Allerton was Asst Gov
to William Bradford and was the 5th signer of the Mayflower Compact before
they landed at Plymouth. This was the forerunner and model for our present
Constitution.
The last survivor of those who came on the "Mayflower"

Mary Allerton, wife of Elder Cushman, came over in the Mayflower in 1620.
She was then about eleven years of age. With her husband she was a member
of the church at Plymouth, and as we may well suppose, she was a worthy companion
of her excellent, pious and useful husband, during his long ministry as Ruling
Elder of the Church. She survived him seven or eight years, and died at the
advance age of ninety. Her name has become quite famous from the fact that
she was in the Mayflower. She was probably buried by the side of her husband,
in the Burying Hill Cemetery at Plymouth, though no monument has ever been
erected to her memory.

His Will was dated 14 Oct 1725 - two years before his death - and was recorded
in Book 5, page 330, of the Plymouth Records. He was buried at Old Cemetery,
Plympton, MA and the following is the inscription on his Grave Stone:
Here lyes buried ye body of Deacon Elkanah Cushman who decd Sept. ye 4th 1727
in ye 77th year of his age.
He was probably a member of the Plympton chh. near thirty years, as his name
stands first in the list of those who joined after the chh. was first formed.
He was, undoubtedly, "a pious, godly man," devoted to the prosperity
of the chh., for no other could hold the important office of deacon in those
days.

One of seven who founded "Old Colony Club" in 1769, which was the
first organized commemoration of the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth,
in 1620. In 1769 made a survey of a shorter route from Plymouth to the Metropolis.
In 1776 embarked for Halifax with the British Army and nothing more known
about him.
Note: source above list only one child, Elkanah
b. June 1, 1769. We had Eleanor born 1793. By looking at the birth date of
the mother, Mary Lothrop b. Oct 1, 1739, it seems Elkanah would be more likely
to be correct.

found:
Elkanah Cushman of Plymouth was the custom house tideman or tax collector.
He fled to Halifax in 1776. That is why we neither find his or his wife's
death in Boston. Either he left behind his children or they returned to Boston
later. If that is correct then Eleanor was born in Nova Scotia. (David T.
Robertson's belief at this time is that Eleanor is the son of this Elkanah
and brother of Elkanah, husband of Susannah W. Lathrop, see Elkanah Jr for
more on this)
Notes for MARY LATHROP:
"Daughter of Ansell Mariner" Chose. Sept 16, 1756, Ebenezer Spooner,

Page, we have her married to Elkanah Cushman, per "Genealogical Register

In the Index of Marriages in Massachusetts Centinel and Columbia Centinel
1784-1840 published by the American Antiquarian Society 1952 (Vol. II C-D
under Cushman) it was the marriage of Elkannah Cushman, merchant, to Eliza
Babbitt in Boston which appeared in the Columbia Centinel 18 Oct 1815. At
this time (see further research below) he believes this Elkanah is the son
of my Elkannah and the brother of Eleanor Cushman. In the Index of Deaths
in Massachusetts Centinel and Columbian Centinel 1784-1840 published by the
American Antiquarian Society 1952, (Vol. 3 C under Cushman), he found the
death notice of Mrs. Elkanah Cushman, consort (wife) of Elkanah Cushman who
died in Boston aged 49 which was published in the Columbia Centinel 11 Feb
1815. He believes this was Elkanah Jr. first wife and that he remarried in
October of the same year.
This is supported in The First Seven Generations
of the Cushman Family in New England by John Augustine Cushman, which tells
us that Elkanah, son of Elkanah and Mary (Lothrop) Cushman married first 26
Dec 1790, Susannah Wendell Lothrop who died 8 Feb 1815 aged 49 and that this
Elkanah married secondly 18 Oct 1815 at Boston, Mary Eliza Babbit.
Elkanah Cushman Jr. is in Boston 1 Aug 1797. He
is described as "hair-dresser" and he purchases a brickhouse and
wooden house and land from Joseph Greene situated on the north-west side of
Washington St. between West and Boylston Sts. (Suffolk Deed 188:24). It is
uncertain whether he had remained in the U.S. during the War or returned afterwards.
If he returned, his sister might have accompanied him, or joined him. Elkanah
Cushman, hairdresser, and his wife Susanna, obtained a mortgage from Joseph
Greene which was paid up and canceled 30 Dec 1802. (Suffolk Deeds 188:25)
. Elkanah (Jr.) married secondly 1815, Mary Elizabeth Babbitt, daughter of
Erasmus and Mary (Sanders) Babbitt was the father of Charlotte Sanders Cushman,
an actress (1816-1876) and four other children. They lived on Prince St. (In
Boston's North End.) The Index contained nothing more on the family.
Elkanah Jr. had been seen in the 1820 census in
Boston, but in 1830 he appears in Charlestown, just over the river from the
North End. Elkanah does not appear thereafter unless he is the one in Kingston,
Plymouth County, MA, but I do not think so. In the Columbia Centinal his youngest
son Augustus dies in Lebanon, NY. I expect that Elkanah moved there.
Further research done by same source as above on Sept. 7, 1998
The first thought I had when I reviewed everything
is that Eleanor Cushman is most likely not the daughter of Mary Lathrop, who
would have been fifty four years of age at her birth. Rather, I expect Eleanor
to be the daughter of Elkanah Jr. whom we know lived in Boston after his father
fled to Canada. This Elkanah Jr. married first, Susannah Wendell Lothrop,
26 Dec 1790. It was probably Susannah who gave birth to Eleanor in 1793. Susannah
died and Jr. married secondly Mary Eliza Babbit 18 Oct 1815. He died 13 Jun
1841 in Boston.

In the Index of Marriages in Massachusetts Centinel
and Columbia Centinel 1784-1840 published by the American Antiquarian Society
1952 (Vol. II C-D under Cushman) it was found that Eleanor Cushman's marriage
to James Weld was in Boston on the Sunday prior to the newspaper notice which
appeared in the Columbia Centinel 20 Feb 1811.
With the knowledge that the Weld - Cushman marriage
was in Boston, I found it in Boston Vital Records which have been microfiched
by Jay Mack Holbrook. It was recorded in Vol. 2 pg. 414 of the Boston Marriages.
James Weld and Eleanor W Cushman were married 17 Feb 1811 by Revd. John Eliot.
From Boston Churches and Ministers by John Hayward 1849 we find that Revd.
John Eliot was pastor of New North Church (Unitarian).
It is believed James first appears in the census
in Boston in 1830. James Weld appears in 1840 in Dorchester and in 1850 he
is in Roxbury (1850 US Census Film M432-330 pg. 122) . He is aged 62 and is
a baker with an estate of $12,000. His wife Isabella Weld, aged 50, was born
in Mass. living with him was twelve year old Charles Eaton who was in school
and two domestics, Sarah Hammond, aged 40 and Elisha W. Cobb aged 50.
Further research done by same source as listed

I my earlier letter to you I told you that I had
found a James Weld in the 1850 census, but that I was unsure that he was yours
as he had a wife Isabella. I speculated that he had remarried. I found a copy
of that page (1850 US Census, Roxbury, Norfolk County, Massachusetts Film
M432-330 pp. 122-123). James was aged 62 (born about 1788) and a Baker and
his Real Estate was valued at $12000, a very rich estate in those days. Isabella
was aged 50 (born about 1800).
Just a few doors farther along the same street
was the home of Ellen Cartwright, (born about 1815) aged 35, born in Massachusetts.
Living with her were daughters Ellen, aged 16, Susan 14, Ann 12, Mary 3 and
Sarah 8, and sons James 7, and Edmund 5, all born in Massachusetts. They also
had two domestics, Mary and Delia White aged 20 & 18 respectively, born
in Ireland. Also living with her were Samuel and Martha Eaton (23 & 22)
who may have been related to Charles Eaton aged 12 seen in James' household.
(They appear too young to be his parents).
Proof of death of James was found in (Massachusetts
Vital Records - Deaths 1867, vol. 203 pg. 264, Roxbury, Norfolk Co., Mass.
). James died 18 Jun 1867 in Roxbury aged 78 years, 7 months, 8 days. He was
married and he died due to Old Age. He was a merchant and had been born in
Roxbury, son of Edmund and Sarah Weld, both of Roxbury.
Based on this new information I returned to the
Weld Collections by Charles Frederick Robinson (1938) and found an Edmund
Weld, a tanner, b. 12 Jan 1728/9, with a wife Sarah. He had eleven children,
though none named James are listed and it is unlikely that he would have had
a son as late as 1788. But he did have a son Edmund Grindell Weld, b. 12 Oct
1753 a "felt-monger." He would be the right age to be the father
of James.
Edmund Grindell Weld was b. in Roxbury 12 Oct
1753. He died before 5 Apr 1796, the date that his wife, Sarah, applies for
the administration of his estate. Roxbury had just recently been set off as
a part of Norfolk County. I have located this administration (Norfolk County
Probate #19565 Roxbury 1796). An allowance was made to the widow but the estate
was insolvent so there is no distribution to their children. The bondsmen
to James' estate was Samuel Weld of Boston and John Harris of Boston. This
suggests that Sarah may have been a Harris. Roxbury Vital Records lists no
children for this couple, though he was sexton of the First Church of Roxbury.
Dedham Courthouse has the will of James Weld of
Roxbury (Norfolk County Probate #19587 Roxbury 1867.
James wrote the will 28 Jan 1860. He mentions his properties on Cottage Street,
Roxbury, and India Street, Boston. His will created a trust for the support
of his wife and sister and the excess of the income of the trust was to go
to his daughter Ellen M. Cartwright, wife of John Cartwright. She to be his
residual legatee. Edward S. Rand was both sole executor of the estate and
Trustee of the Trust.
Highlights of these records include; Edward S.
Rand of Boston asked to be executor of the estate of James Weld of Roxbury
who died 18 Jun 1867, leaving a widow, Isabella Weld and his only child and
daughter, Ellen M. Cartwright, wife of John W. Cartwright of Nantucket. James
Weld was a Baker. Mrs. Weld received $65 per month from the trust and C. E.
Cartwright received a sum for "the board of Mrs. Cobb." Mrs. Cobb
is not mentioned after Sep 2, 1874. I suspect that Mrs. Cobb is the sister
of James Weld. The 1878 report names the children of Ellen M. Cartwright as
"the only parties interested" in this trust. This suggests that
Isabella died in 1877, probably in August (She received payment 5 July). Ellen
must have also died before her as she is not named and her children are. In
the Final report dated 13 Feb 1879, the children of "his [James Weld's]
deceased daughter Ellen M. Cartwright" each receive a settlement from
the trust amounting to $147.14. They were:
John W. Cartwright, Ann E. Richardson, Sarah W.
Galucia, Edmund G. W. Cartwright, Susan H. Folger, Mary S. Coffin, James W.
Cartwright, Wallace F. Cartwright, Frederick H. Cartwright, Charles E. Cartwright,
Frederick G. Cartwright, Annie M. Cartwright
The last three in this list appear to be grandchildren
of Ellen, children of her son Charles E. Cartwright.
In the History of The Graveyards of Boston, by
William H. Whitmore (1878) Benjamin Weld and his wife Nabby sold the Town
of Boston a parcel of land to enlarge Copp's Hill burial ground on Hull Street.
The 37th Lot in this new section went to James Weld who sold it to Phineas
Capen, 23 May 1851. The Capen family was originally from Dorchester and James
Weld had moved from Dorchester back to Roxbury by 1850.
Boston Taxpayers in 1821 by Lewis Bunker Rohrbach
(1988) shows James renting a shop in the Custom House, valued at $1,200 while
he owns a Bake House in the Custom House valued at $2,300, and another shop
in the Custom House valued at $100, also a building on Broad St. valued at
$500, and a building on White Bread Street valued at $200. Clearly, James
is a man of property. James' Mother was living in his property on White Bread
Street and must have died after 1821. The widow Sarah Weld who died in Roxbury
12 Mar 1824 aged 91 (b. 1733) was probably the wife of the elder Edmund6 Weld,
not Edmund Grindell Weld (Roxbury VR 11.662).
The Town of Roxbury by Francis S. Drake (1878)
tells us that Edmund Weld bequeath the Weld Estate to his son Edmund, being
"part of the homestead and training field, and the land adjoining."
This land was bounded by the present Moreland, Fairland, Greenville and Winthrop
Streets and is in the Mount Pleasant section of Roxbury.
Lastly, I went through Norfolk County Deeds for
James Weld. He appears to have had extensive real estate dealings, primarily
in Dorchester, both buying and selling and mortgaging and giving mortgages,
over fifty deeds in all. His holdings are throughout Dorchester. Eleanor W.
Weld released her dower rights on each sale up to 22 Jul 1847, when Ellen
M. Cartwright witnesses her signature (suggesting that Eleanor was too ill
to attend the signing herself). Ellen appears to have taken an active role
in her father's ventures and often appears as a witness on his deeds. On 1
Aug 1848 James states that he "has no wife," and repeats that statement
2 Dec 1848 and on 14 Jun 1849, Isabella Weld signs off her dower rights on
a deed. So, Eleanor died between 22 Jul 1847 and 1 Aug 1848 and he married
Isabella between 2 Dec 1848 and 14 Jun 1849. James moved from Dorchester to
Roxbury just after his wife's death.

His father's name was Samuel Adams, and for his being so named by his father;
the old patriot, his namesake, presented him with a pair of silver shoe buckles,
which he wore in the Hall of Liberty at Philadelphia, when he signed the Declaration
of Independence, and which are now preserved by Samuel Adams Eaton of Boston,
a precious relic of the great and good man after whom he was named.

Ellen Maria Weld was not born in Nantucket. In
the book Vital Records of Nantucket she is the only Weld birth listed and
following the entry is the source note "p.r.38" meaning private
record 38. This record was the genealogical research of William C. Folger
which was placed in the possession of the Nantucket Historical Association.
The authors of Nantucket VRs noted "This compilation has been used because
of the valuable clues it affords, but its statements should be received with
caution, as it is not free from errors. It should be understood that in many
instances the events recorded did not take place in Nantucket.." In fact
I find evidence to doubt that Ellen ever lived on Nantucket. Her husband's
family, the Cartwrights, did originate on Nantucket. It is possible that John
W. Cartwright, Sr. was born there, though his birth record comes from the
same source as his wife's. I found that their son John W. Cartwright J |
